      NMU volleyball closes regular season on the road

      MARQUETTE, Mich. â?? The Northern Michigan University volleyball team closes out the regular season of play this weekend with two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contests on the road. The Wildcats first travel to Saginaw Valley State on Friday (Nov. 15) before travelling back to the Upper Peninsula to compete against Lake Superior State on Saturday (Nov. 16) in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

      NMU is 20-9 overall and 13-3 in the conference after a split over the weekend. The Wildcats won in five sets over Hillsdale on Friday (Nov. 8), before falling to Northwood, 3-1, on Saturday (Nov. 9) in two road matches.

      Senior Lina Lopes leads the Wildcats with 330 kills on the season, while seniors Kalli Herron (317) and Sarah Hamilton (273) are close behind. Sophomore Alex Berger leads the defense on 363 digs with Lopes adding 300. Harley sets up the offense with 1,041 assists for the season.

      SVSU is 16-11 overall and 8-8 in the GLIAC on the season. The Cardinals were defeated in two road games over the weekend to Grand Valley State (3-0) on Friday and to Ferris State in five sets on Saturday.

      Kelsey Ferla leads the Cardinals in kills with 293, Ashley Driscoll adds 187 and Lyndsay Reynolds has 167. Brooke Tiller leads SVSU with 468 digs on the season, for second in the GLIAC. Kelly Vellucci (498) and Nicole Adam (479) share the setting duties.

      NMU holds the 53-9 all-time advantage over the Cardinals, including a 3-0 win in Marquette earlier this season. In the match, Lopes led her team with 15 kills, Alex Larsen had 12 and Hamilton had 11.

      LSSU (4-19, 2-14 GLIAC) is currently on a six game losing streak, with its last win on Oct. 25 against non-conference Maryville. The Lakers were shut out by both Ferris State and Grand Valley State on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

      Emily Snyder has 243 kills for the Lakers on the season, with Jen Marren adding 219. Meghan Drobish leads the defense with 371 digs and Janelle Nagy sets up the offense with 739 assists.

      The Wildcats also lead the all-time series over the Lakers, 73-16-1. NMU has won the last straight 16 matches, which includes two wins earlier this season. The first matchup of the season was on Sept. 14 at the Superior Oasis Wildcat Open, followed by Sept. 21 in Marquette, both were 3-0 wins.

      NOTES:*The Wildcats are currently in a four-way tie for second place in the GLIAC behind number one Grand Valley State (15-1). NMU is tied with Ashland, Ferris State, and Northwood who all sit at 13-3. The GLIAC Tournament starts on Wednesday (Nov. 20) with teams finishing first through fourth in the regular season hosting teams finishing fifth through eighth.*In her career, Lopes has 1,296 kills and 1,170 digs in 433 sets and 117 matches played. In the Wildcat Volleyball record books Lopes is third in career kills with 1,296, gaining on Tricia Tuler (1990-93) who has 1301. *Harley has 2,381 assists in her career which is good for 7th in the NMU record book behind Abby Lovewll (2009-11) with 2,627. Harley is fourth in NMU's history in assists per set as she averages 10.35 assists per set in 230 played sets.*Herron enters the weekend with 973 career kills in 395 sets and 111 matches.
