TIFFIN , Ohio â?? The Northern Michigan University volleyball team captured its second shutout of the weekend to sweep its two matches in Ohio. The Wildcats defeated Tiffin 3-0 from Gillmor Center on Saturday (Oct. 19) afternoon in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup. NMU improves to 16-5 overall and 10-1 in conference play.
NMU dominated all sets with scores of 25-11, 25-8 and 25-11. In the first set, the Green and Gold jumped out to a quick 8-3 start. The next five points were on freshman Megan Dahl's serve, including two kills by senior Kalli Herron to increase the lead to 12-3. A kill by senior Sarah Hamilton gave NMU set number one.
In set two, the Wildcats held the Dragons to just eight points. NMU scored five consecutive points once during the set, again on Dahl's serve. The Wildcats held the 22-8 advantage on sophomore Alex Berger's serve and a service ace by Berger closed out the set.
In the final set, the score was tied four separate times and the Dragons led two times before NMU took the lead for good. The Wildcats had the 11-10 lead going in to senior Kellisha Harley's serve, where six points were scored, including a service ace and two kills from freshman Alex Larsen. Leading 17-11, NMU scored the next eight points to finish the match on Herron's serve.
Senior Lina Lopes ended the night with 12 kills, Hamilton added seven and Herron had six. As a team, NMU finished with 40 kills for a .330 attack percentage. Berger led the defense with 13 digs with Harley and Lopes adding seven a piece. Harley set up the offense with 29 assists.
Tiffin (7-9, 2-9 GLIAC) was led by Jordan Jenkins with 17 digs and Danielle McQuade had four kills. Tiffany Buchinger finished with 12 assists for the Dragons.
The Wildcats take a break from GLIAC play next weekend (Oct. 26-27) as they travel to Aurora, Ill. for the GLIAC/Great Lakes Valley Conference Crossover Tournament.
