      NMU's Lopes moving up in career volleyball category

      Senior outside hitter Lina Lopes of the Northern Michigan University recently recorded the 1,000th kill of her career. Lopes joins 13 former Wildcats who have reached the 1,000-kill mark for their careers. Lopes currently ranks 12th all-time with 1,074 kills.During the fourth match of the year for the Wildcats, Lopes tallied nine kills vs. No. 19 West Florida. She earned her 1,000th kill in the middle of the first set."Lina has been a go-to, mainstay, for us for three years and is still willing to take big swings at big moments this year," said coach Dominic Yoder.The native of Belo Horizonte, Brazil is a two-time Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team selection. She was also GLIAC Honorable Mention and a two-time member of the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team. Lopes was the 2010 GLIAC Freshman of the Year and AVCA Midwest Region Freshman of the Year. This season, she has been named to the West Florida Opening Weekend All-Tournament Team and the Superior Oasis Wildcat Open All-Tournament Team.The 6-3 Wildcats begin GLIAC play this weekend by hosting Saginaw Valley State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Lake Superior State at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Coach Yoder is holding a pre-match Chalk Talk in the Izzo Mariuccui Room at 6:35 p.m. before Friday's match.
