      NMU's Martin and Elfstrom lead junior sprint at U.S. Nationals

      HEBER, Utah ?? Freshman Adam Martin and sophomore Sam Elfstrom finished first and second, respectively, in the men's junior sprint as the Northern Michigan University Nordic skiing team completed action at the U.S. Cross Country Skiing Championships Friday.

      Martin and Elfstrom each won their quarterfinal and semifinal heats before finishing in the top two of the A final.

      "I am very pleased by our performance at the U.S. Nationals," said NMU head coach Sten Fjeldheim. "Having two athletes qualify to represent the USA at both the U23 World Championshoips and the Junior World Championships will for sure help our program in the coming years. It was a great showing for NMU."

      Senior Rosie Frankowski (4:01.83) was the 11th fastest qualifier in the women's sprint followed by junior Felicia Gesior (4:20.10) in 12th. Sophomore Mary Kate Cirelli (4:05.67) was the 28th fastest qualifier in the field.

      Senior George Cartwright (3:53.13) was the 20th fastest qualifier in the men's sprint while junior Kyle Bratrud (3:58.71) was 26th.

      Due to scheduling changes at the U.S. Nationals the Wildcats will not compete at the Minnesota Championships as scheduled and will return to action Jan. 18 at the Telemark Distance CCSA.
