The Detroit Red Wings started the NHL free agency period with a quiet opening day.
The team signed forward Riley Sheahan to a $1.9 million, 2-year contract. He scored nine goals and 24 points with the team last season. Goaltender Petr Mrazek received a one-year contract extension.
After missing out on several top defenseman like Dan Boyle, who signed a 2-year, $9 million contract with the New York Rangers, and Christian Ehrhoff who signed with Pittsburgh, Detroit brought back Kyle Quincey. The defenseman was offered a 2-year deal.
The Red Wings also brought in former Michigan Wolverine, center Kevin Porter, to a one-year, two-way deal. Center Andy Miele has a similar deal. That way, both players can split their time with the Red Wings and the Grand Rapids Griffins.
