Rae Drake takes over Westwood boys varsity basketball program

Westwood High School has hired Rae Drake to be its new boys varsity basketball coach.

â??One of the things we were really interested in talking to Coach Drake, was the fact that he is a veteran, but heâ??s still got that fire in him to be competitive and lead us,â?? Bryan DeAugustine, NICE Community School District Superintendent, said. â??We really need that voice to come and take over our athletes, who have a lot of potential in basketball, and who can lead them to success.â??

Drake replaces Ryan Reichel, who was with the program the past three seasons.

Veteran experience is what Drake brings. He was most recently with the Northern Michigan University womenâ??s basketball program as an assistant coach.

Prior to that, he spent over three decades in different coaching roles. He was the assistant coach in Iron Mountain for 14 years. In 1996, began his stint as the head coach of the West Iron County boys basketball program. During his nine seasons with the Wykons, Drake led them to two district titles and seven conference championships.

â??[Drake] comes with a great pedigree,â?? DeAugustine said. â??Weâ??re excited for everyone to get together and start planning for next yearâ??s basketball season.â??
