      UP Sports Hall of Famer Jerry Cvengros dies

      A former state champion football coach, athletic director and long time Upper Peninsula voice with the Michigan High School Athletic Association has died.

      Ironwood native Jerry Cvengros won a Class A state football title with Escanaba in 1981.

      He compiled a 161-42-3 record in 23 seasons as head coach. The Eskymos were the state runner-up in 1979.

      Cvengros was also athletic director and principal at Escanaba until 1988, when he joined the Michigan High School Athletic Association as an associate director until 2001.

      He taught, coached and/or served in the Escanaba district for 30 years.

      While at Escanaba, Cvengros also represented Upper Peninsula Class A and B schools on the MHSAA Representative Council from 1983-88 and served as the council's president from 1986-88.

      Cvengros was inducted into the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame 1981 plus he's in the Michigan High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame

      Cvengros graduated from Ironwood High School in 1951 and played football at Wisconsin.

      He earned degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Superior and Northern Michigan University.

      A visitation will take place beginning at 10 a.m. Monday, april 7, at St. Martha Parish in Okemos, with a funeral mass to follow at 11 a.m.

      Jerry Cvengros was 80 years old.
