MARQUETTE , Mich. â?? After claiming a 33-21 victory at home over the weekend (Oct. 26), the Northern Michigan University football team continues play at the Superior Dome as Northwood University visits for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 2). The game marks the final home contest for the 2013 football 'Cats. The Wildcats will recognize their seniors in a pre-game presentation as well as with a luncheon on Friday (Nov. 1). Friday's luncheon will be held at 11:45 a.m. in the University Center. The event is open to the public and the charge to attend is $10.
All military personnel and their families get free admission to Saturday's (Nov. 2) game. Northern Michigan University will be honoring Veteran's during the game and the Michigan Army National Guard will an interactive display for fans.
The Wildcats enter Saturday's game with a 2-5 overall and conference record. Northwood enters with a 2-6 overall record and a 1-5 record in the GLIAC. While Northern defeated Wayne State on Saturday (Oct. 26), Northwood lost 23-17 to Grand Valley State.
NMU is averaging 23.1 points per game and 367.1 yards of total offense on 139.4 yards rushing and 222.7 yards passing. Northwood averages 26.4 points per game and 353.2 yards, including 104.8 rushing and 248.5 passing. Aside from last week's victory, NMU defeated Findlay in the first game of the year, before falling in the next five contests. Northwood's two wins are over Quincy (non-conference) and Tiffin. Their five conference losses are to Walsh, Wayne State, Saginaw Valley State, Michigan Tech and Grand Valley.
Freshman Shaye Brown is 38-for-64 in the air for 436 passing yards with two starts as quarterback. Sophomore Wyatt Jurasin had three touchdowns along with 127 rushing yards and 18 receiving yards in the Wildcat victory over Wayne State (Oct. 26) . On the season Jurasin leads the Wildcat run game with 369 yards on 91 carries, averaging 4.1 yards per carry. Junior Marcus Tucker and Senior Christian Jessie lead the Wildcat receivers as Tucker has 500 yards on 36 receptions while Jessie has 33 catches for 471 yards.
The Wildcat defense continues to mature under the direction of first year offensive coordinator Joe Ballard. They have five interceptions, six fumble recoveries, and 13 sacks in the 2013 season. Junior Nick Krause has 50 total tackles, while sophomore Levi Perry has 43 and sophomore Thomas McNamara has 42.
Senior Christian Jessie has taken the reins on the Wildcat kick return in 2013 logging 28 returns for 682 yards, an average of 24.4 per return. His longest kick-off return of the 2013 season was for 97 yards against Hillsdale. Through 37 career games Jessie has 77 kick returns which is second in the Wildcat record books behind Vincent Mayfield who had 79 returns for 1644 yards in 2002-2005. In 2012 Jessie set an NMU record when he returned the kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown against Ferris State. Additionally Jessie holds the Wildcat records for most returns in a season (37 in 2012), most return yards in a season (1,059 in 2012), most returns in a game (7 at Ashland in 2013), and most return yards in a game (179 at Ashland).
In the all-time series between the Wildcat and Timberwolves, NMU holds the 24-8 advantage, including winning the last three consecutive meetings. The two teams met for the first time in 1968 when the Wildcats defeated Northwood 63-0. Last season, the Wildcats took the 21-13 meeting over Northwood on the road in Midland, Mich. Christian Jessie had two touchdowns in the game, both on passes from Cody Scepaniak , while Scepaniak added a touchdown of his own. The last time the two teams met in the Superior Dome was in 2011 when the Wildcats won 38-17.
The Wildcats will honor 11 seniors at the luncheon on Friday (Nov. 1) who will play in their final home game for the green-and-gold on Saturday (Nov. 2).
