NEGAUNEE -- The Negaunee football team finished up their first week of practice Friday. After finishing the season 10-2, with a 6-0 conference record, the Miners are eager to start the upcoming season.
Last season, the team was lead by several key seniors: multi-sport athlete and quarterback Tanner Uren, MPC first team middle linebacker Adam Francis, Adam Katona, and Alex Dempsey.
Now that they have all graduated, Miners' head coach Paul Jacobson says the seniors this year are the players who he is going to rely on the most.
"The biggest thing is the leadership from our seniors right now," said Jacobson. "We've got a great off-season workout and conditioning program and it's pretty much senior led. They're going to take us in the direction we want to go as a team."
Those seniors include players like offensive tackle Jeremy Bell and running back Tyler LaJoie.
"We're going to have a good team this year and I'm hoping we can get farther in the playoffs than we did last year," said Bell. "But, we got to take it step by step and win every game."
The Miners were the only team to defeat the current Michigan football state champion, the Ishpeming Hematites.
Negaunee starts its season Aug. 30 against Manistique.
