MDOC inmates say killed Alger Correctional Facility inmate was known as a ‘bully’ during jury trial
MUNISING, Mich. (WLUC) - An Alger Correctional Facility inmate continues his jury trial for second-degree murder. Michigan Department of Corrections inmates took the stand as witnesses in Alger County Circuit Court on Tuesday.
47-year-old Demetrius Montgomery killed a fellow inmate, Drequan Glover, during a physical altercation two years ago. However, the defense says this was done in self-defense.
One witness, Jerry Weathers, ran a classroom as an inmate of Alger Correctional Facility at the time. After a class on June 18th, 2024, Weathers heard Montogomery tell Glover to leave him alone.
Weathers says Glover was a big man and came off as a bully.
“I used to talk to him all the time about that, you know, kind of tone it down a little bit, you know what I mean,” Weathers said. “You’re trying to go home. This isn’t, you know, listen, this isn’t conducive to you going home.”
During cross examination, the prosecution revisited comments Weathers made about Glover wearing a padded jacket earlier in the day.
“And you said something about an inmate that’s wearing padding because they are anticipating someone assaulting them, correct?” asked the prosecution.
“Yes, it’s preventative,” Weathers said.
MDOC inmate Jorey McCormick also says Glover was known to intimidate other inmates.
“If you owed him some money, or, you know what I’m saying, you just owed him something, he was very aggressive about it.”
He also witnessed Glover being knocked down to the ground. During testimony, it was noted that Montgomery was nicknamed ‘Meech’ and Glover was called ‘Jug.’
“How many more times did Meech hit Jug while Jug was on the ground?” The prosecution asked.
“Like six, seven,” McCormick said.
“Do you remember which hand Mr. Montgomery, Meech, used?”
“Both of them.”
The defense’s witness testimony will continue Wednesday.
